Short Answer
Many people worry about this, and the honest answer is that acupuncture is very safe when practised by a properly trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Serious complications are rare. As for pain: most patients are surprised by how little they feel — the needles are extremely fine, and the sensation is usually light heaviness or tingling, not pain.
Long Answer

Acupuncture Is Safe With a Qualified Practitioner

Acupuncture, in trained hands, is a low-risk procedure. The two key factors are the practitioner's qualification and hygiene. A responsible practitioner uses exclusively sterile, single-use needles, follows disinfection protocols, and knows their limits (referring you to a doctor when needed). When these standards are met, serious complications — infection, nerve injury, organ damage — are rare. Scepticism is healthy, and asking about training, hygiene and insurance is a legitimate and welcome step.

What Happens With the Sensation

On the pain question: unlike a vaccination or a blood test, acupuncture needles are barely thicker than a hair, so insertion is quick and subtle. Instead of pain, you typically feel a soft sensation of heaviness, warmth or tingling around the needle — known in Chinese medicine as the 'deqi'. Some people feel little or nothing at all. During the session, needles stay in for roughly twenty minutes while you relax. Minor and temporary effects (a small bruise in about 3% of sessions, occasional drowsiness) are far more common than anything serious.

How Ghislaine Can Help

If you are anxious about needles, say so — Ghislaine adapts the placement, uses fewer needles to start, and checks in with you. She practises in English at Centre Équilibre, 29 Quai Claude Bernard, 38000 Grenoble. With clear communication, even needle-anxious patients usually find the experience far more relaxing than they expected.
In summary
